Don’t miss the February 10th NBC Sports broadcast
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (February 3, 2007) – Kasey Hayes (Liberal, Kan.) continues to redefine the title of Professional Bull Riders (PBR) young gun by dominating a field of intense competitors and walking away from the Deep South with nearly $100,000 for his efforts. The Atlanta Classic presented by Zaxby’s, stop number seven on the Built Ford Tough Series Presented by Wrangler (BFTS), proved to be a suitable encore for last night’s event in Tampa, Fla., featuring the world’s best 45 bull riders engaging in battle with the rankest bucking bulls in the industry.
The southern states were good to the 21-year old this weekend. His performance in Tampa and win in Atlanta have resulted in him winning more PBR dollars so far in 2007 than he won in all of 2006, when asked about his performance Hayes stated,
“The second place finish in Tampa was awesome, but a first feels even better. It feels great to win so much money in one weekend, I’d like to spend it on something cool, but I’ll probably save it to tell you the truth.”
Fans attending the Atlanta Classic presented by Zaxby’s were initially awed by Shane Proctor (Grand Coulee, Wash.) and his 87.75 point ride aboard Frontier/Teague/Steiner’s Just A Dream. Proctor became only the sixth man to cover the great animal athlete. After his ride, Proctor led the event standings until Hayes got aboard Page & Teague Bucking Bull’s Sunshine in the Championship Round. Proctor’s performance was enough to secure second in the event standings and win $14,820. He led the standings until fellow young gun Hayes got aboard his bull in the Championship Round.
Hayes entered the Built Ford Tough Championship Round in the number one position. He capitalized on his 2.25 point lead with an excellent short-round draw, Sunshine, to win the event and $82,610 in prize money. As the rider entering the Championship Round in the lead and eventually winning the event, Hayes collected the $50,000 Ford Moment of Truth bonus available in Atlanta. Sunshine of Page & Teague Bucking Bulls assisted Adriano Moraes (Cachoeira Paulista, Sao Paulo, Brazil) in his recent 2006 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals Championship as well as bucked Rocky McDonald (Col. Juarez, Mexico) to a 92 point score at the Madison Square Garden event earlier this season. Just recently tossed from the back of Sunshine last weekend in Charlotte, Hayes was excited about his draw, “I got on him last weekend and he threw me. This week I just wanted revenge.”
Hayes’ revenge, and the performances of the other PBR stars in Atlanta can be seen next Sunday on NBC Sports. The Atlanta Classic presented by Zaxby’s will air Sunday, February 10th at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Please check your local listings or visit http://www.pbrnow.com/media/tv/ for the complete broadcast schedule.
The BFTS makes uninterrupted stops from now through the end of April, promising bull riding fans one of the most intense and grueling races in national sports to decide who will wear the million dollar PBR crown at the end of the 2007 season.
BEHIND THE CHUTES:
Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s “Ride with the Best” Match-up Bonus: As the winner of last night’s Tampa, Fla. event, Justin McBride (Elk City, Okla.) was eligible for the Enterprise Rent-A-Car “Ride with the Best” bonus money in Atlanta, Ga. McBride was unsuccessful in his attempt against Bond, James Bond of Berger/Ryken, thus awarding the $5,000 bounty to the bull owners.
Ford Truck Moment of Truth Bonus: Kasey Hayes (Liberal, Kan.) led the Atlanta Classic Presented by Zaxby’s going into the Built Ford Tough Championship Round. Hayes finished the event in the top spot, thus claiming the $50,000 Ford Truck Moment of Truth Bonus. Since Hayes claimed the bonus this weekend, the purse available for next week’s Amp’d Mobile Invitational in Anaheim will be $5,000.
Ford Super Duty Challenge: As the event winner, Kasey Hayes (Liberal, Kan.) has qualified for a chance to compete at the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals, against all other 2007 Built Ford Tough Series event winners, for $50,000 toward the purchase of a 2007 Ford Super Duty Truck. The Ford Super Duty Challenge contestant who finishes the highest in the event aggregate during the 2007 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals will win the Ford Super Duty Challenge.
Salem National Lease Bull of the Event: Frontier and Teague Bucking Bulls’ Big Bucks’ 46.5 bull score was enough to claim the Bull of the Event title and $1,250 as a part of Salem National Lease’s exciting bonus program. The program awards $1,250 to the top bull of the event as determined by the PBR judges’ bull scores.
Cabela’s World’s Foremost Ride: The event winner, Kasey Hayes (Liberal, Kan.) recorded the highest marked ride of the evening when he topped Berger/Dakota Cattle Company’s White Diamond for 89 points. In doing so, he earned $1,000. Rocky McDonald (Col. Juarez, Mexico) is in the lead for the Cabela’s World’s Foremost Ride bonus of $25,000 with his 92 point performance in New York City earlier this season on Page & Teague Bucking Bulls’ Sunshine.
The rider who achieves the highest score at each BFTS regular season event during the 2007 BFTS regular season excluding the PBR World Finals receives a bonus of $1,000 for the event. The PBR athlete who achieves the highest marked qualifying ride during the entire 2007 BFTS regular season, excluding the World Finals event will receive $25,000, while second and third place finishers will be awarded $10,000 and $5,000 respectively. The bull rider that achieves the highest marked ride through the course of the entire 2007 PBR BFTS World Finals will earn an additional $10,000.
